| | The biggest problem I have with software development for my own projects these days is my own time management. If I'm lucky I can perhaps get 10-15 hours a week with half of that on Saturdays when my wife works. A couple of hours in the evening after work is also possible nut that's not great for development as it's barely enough time to get into "the zone". That's the period when I'm most relaxed and focused and thus productive. It's reckoned that one interruption can knock you out of the zone for 15-30 minutes. The Big excitement is of course the new iPhone which was announced today. You'll read plenty about it elsewhere so I've just added my thoughts below. See you next week! | | A New Improved iPhone Appears Very Soon But that's just improved sexy looking hardware, with 5 MP camera + front facing camera. More importantly is iOS 4, the next ( and free to upgrade) version of the iPhone Operating system which becomes available in 14 days on June 21st for the iPhone/iPod Touch but not iPad. It's now got 1,500 APIs with over 100 new features such as limited multi-tasking, folders, lots more Apps. This also includes new ways of making money with Apple's own iAds adverts in Apps. As the camera has improved so has the software interface for controlling it. You can record video with it and replay them all under software control. Whether the APIs include editing I'm not sure but I'd hazard a guess so. Also significant is the new version of Xcode 3.2.3 which simplifies development by auto provisioning devices so that simplifies running your own Apps on your own hardware but you still have to be a registered developer. Xcode includes SDK 4.0 for iPhone/iPod touch and SDK 3.2 for iPad development plus the documentation auto downloads after you install it! The iPad won't however get iOS 4 for a few months hence the need for SDK 3.2. | Silverlight 4 For VS 2010 But it's still not for the Express versions and I very much doubt it ever will be. Running this upgrades your Visual Studio 2010 to Silverlight 4 development and enhances WPF development as well. Silverlight 4 has expanded the number of features so for example you get local fonts, printing, use of Webcam and microphones, support for Chrome, bidirectional text, COM interop and WCF RIA services. The link is located on the second line under the big green install button on this page.. You can read what's new in more detail on a Microsoft developer's blog. I'll keep beating this drum though. I think Microsoft is missing a massive opportunity to gain millions of developers by making Silverlight development free and open to anyone. Why not create a Visual Silverlight 2010 Express that lets developers create Silverlight applications? That would be a real Flash killer. | ICFP Programming Contest : 18-21 June 2010 One of the big annual programming contests contests that's open to anyone, in this its 13th year, it's actually run from Leipzig in Germany between June 18-21 2010. It starts at 12.00 noon GMT so US developers will need to rise early that day! This contest works by you downloading data to your computer, solving the problem then uploading the answer. First place gets $1000.00, the lightning round $500.00 and Judges prize of $500.00. You may be required to submit source code afterwards for verification.Good luck! Don't forget, if you know of any contests I've not listed below, let me know and I'll add them. The list has grown now so it's spilled onto two pages! Please email your contest details to Email cplus.guide@about.com so I can add them to the list. | A Useful Hex Editor Component One of the not so frequently used but handy when you need it is a hex editor, a tool that lets you view files in hexadecimal and text. The more powerful ones also let you search for text strings, or byte sequences and even in different bases. Be Hex Editor i's open source so it can be extended and is a .NET editor component that lets you open a file and change bytes in it and save it back. It's also useful for examining files before you open them so you can see if that harmless looking text file is actually carrying executable code. This does include text/hex search. I tried loading this into Visual C# 2010 Express and it upgraded the project and compiled with just a couple of minor warnings which didn't affect its execution. The Setup project appears to have been removed though. | | | | C / C++ / C# Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | Plan a Unique Vegas Wedding The minister, music and champagne are just the beginning -- why not get married aboard a helicopter or have a pirate swing in to deliver your rings?
